Ahaba 2023 Festival Calendar

The annual traditional festivals of the communities that make up

Ahaba (Asaba) of Delta state, have kicked off in many communities since May 14, with 

Onishe, Ulor, 

Igbaji Eke UlorAsaba is from the exclamation Ahabam, meaning “I have chosen well.” 

Asaba consisted of nine Ebos (Quarters) but due to internal strife, wars with other communities and slave trade that followed, these Ebos were reduced to only 5. 

The Ebos are:

  1. Umuezei
  2. Ugbomanta
  3. Umuaji
  4. Umuagu
  5. Umuonaje

August, will witness some of these festivals listed below; ULO

This is a bi-annual festival held in july to mark the cleansing of the town of evil spirits, illnesses and misfortunes.

AJA

This means “sacrifice” and is celebrated annually in August to appease the gods and mark the beginning of harvest period.

Iwaji

This is celebated in september and marks the harvest period. It celebrates the abundance and availability of new yams.

Ine or Ekwensu

This is a five day celebration with each day for each Asaba Village. It is marked by a military like parade and war dances reminiscent of the old battles in which Asaba people distinguished themselves.

Olia Oma

This is a feast day at the end of the harvet during which families give sacrifices to their dead mothers. Sought of mothers day for deceased mothers.

August 21-Idozi Ani Ahaba

August 23 Nkwo Aja

August 24 Ichu Aja

August 25-27 Mgba Aja

August 28-Igbaji EkeSeptember 8-Iwaji (Egbu Anyasi Umuene)

The festivals will end on October 11, with Igbaji Eke Agu-Na-Jaji
