A Guerrilla fighter, freedom or secessionist, needs the protection of his host community and if he betrays them, oppresses them or take their women by force, the community, will retaliate and point them out, their camps inclusive to the State.
No community wants to exchange one oppressor with another. The rebel must show the host community that they are better off with them than the State. Boko Haram understands this and it is one of the factors, that has kept them alive all these years-local support.
